International Workshop 'Current developments in remediation of contaminated lands' was organized within activity of PROLAND’s Workpackage 6 in collaboration with colleagues from USDA Beltsville, Liverpool John Moores University and Ohio State University. The meeting was held in Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Pulawy in October 27 – 29 October 2005. The programme consisted of two-day scientific sessions and a one-day study tour throughout Pulawy region, including historical sites, natural landscapes and boat trip through Wisla river.

The goal of the meeting was to present and discuss recent advances in remediation of soils and wastelands contaminated with both inorganic or organic contaminants. Severe soil contamination with metals and organic pollutants occurred at numerous lands under pressure of human industrial activity. Such sites are often barren due to contaminant toxicity that leads to further dispersion of contaminants through wind and water erosion or leaching. Remediation of metal contaminated soils and wastelands is an urgent need to reduce the impact of contaminated sites on local environment. Contamination of agriculturally used soils may lead to excessive transfer of contaminants to food chain. Such soils also have to be properly managed.

Scientists from 19 countries participated in the Workshop including Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Ukraine, United Kingdom and USA. 10 invited lectures and 20 regular oral presentations were grouped into six thematic sessions:
- Phytostabilization of metal contaminated sites
- Modern approaches to site evaluation and treatment
- Remediation of soils contaminated with radionuclides
- Application of remediation techniques to different environments - case studies
- Phytoextraction of metals from contaminated soils
- Remediation of sites contaminated with organic compounds.

Presentations provided the most recent outputs in remediation of soils persistently contaminated with various pollutants such as metals, radionuclides or organic compounds. Presented in situ methods of soil remediation included stimulation of contaminants immobilisation or decomposition processes as well as phytoextraction of metals. Emphasis was given to practical applications of remediation methods to different environments and site types.

Mechanisms and factors crucial for successful phytostabilization of metals were discussed - the discussion was strengthened by presenting several case studies. Importance of tools for quantitative site evaluation and remediation effectiveness assessment were pointed out. Different aspects of phytoextraction of metals were discussed including its principles, present status, perspectives, economic analysis and rhizosphere processes affecting effectiveness of the process. The workshop was also an opportunity to review progress in developing phytotechnologies for remediation of soils contaminated with radionuclides and organic compounds. Natural processes of soil recovery after contamination were emphasized. The role of soil microorganisms in soil decontamination or site restoration was another valuable part of the discussion.

Poster session was a significant complement of oral sessions. All poster and oral presentations abstracts can be found in the book of abstracts.
